Right in the middle of Beijing, this quiet Hutong was the target of a very inspiring project. Using the structure of some add-on kitchens that used to occupy part of the courtyard, the architects designed in cooperation with the local inhabitants a small library for children and a mini art space.
For the architects renovating and redesigning these structures was a way to recognize them as an important historical layer and “as a critical embodiment of Beijing’s contemporary civil life in hutongs that has so often been overlooked” (ZAO/standardarchitecture).
